Umbrella Base Types

Setting up a patio umbrella in your own backyard is an easy task when you use a quality umbrella base. All types of patio umbrellas need some sort of base to support them. If the base is not strong or heavy enough, the umbrella risks falling over if a string wind passes through. Choosing a base can be just as fun as choosing the umbrella being that they come in so many colors, materials and styles. Interestingly enough, many umbrellas do not come with a base in the box, in which case they must be purchased separately. There are several styles of bases, each of which accommodates a different type of outdoor umbrella. Choose the right base and you can have your new umbrella set up in no time.

Standard Umbrella Base

A standard umbrella is simply one that has a straight pole leading up to the canopy. A standard base has a hole in the center for the pole to sit in. A small thumb screw keeps the pole securely within the base. It is important to not load the base with an umbrella that is too large for the base to handle. Even if the base can support the umbrella’s weight, it might still topple over when the wind hits it.

Standard umbrella bases provide a great way to express creativity in your backyard. These bases have many intriguing patterns, designs and colors that blend in well with yards and gardens. These bases can also be “shape coordinated”, matching the shape of the base to the shape of the umbrella.

Cantilever / Offset Umbrella Base

If you have a cantilever umbrella, a different base will be needed. These umbrellas sit on an adjustable frame which holds the umbrella top over an area. Furniture can be placed right under the umbrella’s shade without the base getting in the way. Offset bases are heavier than standard ones because they have more weight to support. Many of these bases have roller wheels on the bottom to aid in transport of the umbrella between locations in the yard.

Pole Diameter

Generally, you don’t have to worry about whether or not your umbrella will fit properly into a base. However, it is always a good idea to check the base’s hole diameter and match it with your current umbrella. A hole too big will result in the umbrella wobbling around, sitting crooked. Too small of a hole and you won’t be able to fit the umbrella inside.

Materials and Designs

Choosing a material for your patio umbrella base is a matter of personal taste. Metal bases can be quite decorative, featuring swirled and floral designs embedded in the cast iron. Cast iron is the most common metal used because it can be cast into many shapes and is quite heavy. The downside is that they can be difficult to manage and have high shipping costs when ordered online.

Plastic bases are not as decorative but they get the job done. They consist of a hollow plastic container which users fill with water or sand. This provides the weight needed to hold up the umbrella without tipping. With durable plastic, users don’t have to worry about weather damage such as chipping or cracking. One added convenience over metal versions is that they can be emptied for transport or storage.
