Patio Furniture CushionsIf a patio cushion is in good repair, it can be cleaned using a simple cleaning mixture. When a cushion gets so worn that it can no longer be used, it helps to take measurements of the patio furniture to ensure that the new cushions will fit properly. Learn more below.

Measuring for New Patio Cushions:
The only way to ensure that new cushions will fit properly is to take measurements. There are two ways to do this. You can take measurements of the old cushions or the furniture itself. Start by measuring the height of the back of the chair. Also measure the length of the seat portion. Finally, take a measurement of the chair width not including the arm rests. While you’re at it, estimate how thick you want the cushions to be. If the previous cushions were satisfactory, you can take measurements from them instead. These measurements can be compared with outdoor patio furniture cushions at the store.

Cleaning Patio Furniture Cushions:
Mix up a cleaning solution of 1 teaspoon Borax, 1 teaspoon dish washing soap and 1 quart of warm water. Pour it into a hand sprayer for application. After removing the cushion from the furniture, spray all sides of it with the solution, saturating it well. Set the cushion aside for 15 minutes to allow the solution to remove the dirt and kill mildew. Follow up by spraying the patio cushion with a garden hose to remove the solution and dirt along with it. You can scrub the surface with a soft nylon brush if needed. Hang the cushion over a wall to dry. Once dry, spray the cushions with fabric protector such as the ones from Scotch. Use UV protected sprays to guard against sun fading.

Upgrade Possibilities:
High quality cushions have built-in UV guard which protects the fabric against fading and sun rot. Having a rubberized backing on the cushions greatly helps them to stay in place and not scoot around. Double stitching on the straps which hold the cushion to the seat is desired because the constant tension on such straps can result in them tearing off. In fact, seeking out cushions for outdoor patio furniture which feature double stitching throughout the whole product is ideal. Users can select between foam and filler cushioning according to their preference. Foam inserts tend to be firmer than filler ones (such as cotton or polyester filling).
