To get back to the roots of American outdoor furniture, yard owners are selecting countryside style seating such as the
Adirondack chair. These chairs are built from natural woods that create a style which hearkens back hundreds of years. Seen in the front of New York country side homes over one hundred years ago, the Adirondack must be one great chair for its style to have lasted so long. One of the reasons why the chair has become so prominent is that it can be build easily and cheaply. Adirondack chair plans are available for people who want to build a chair of their own from scratch. With a modest amount of tools and some beams of wood from the lumberyard, an Adirondack chair can be yours in no time.
The best part about creating your own chair is that you get to choose your own wood and finish. The Adirondack allows for complete customization of both. Users of the chair can buy an unfinished version if they do not desire to build one themselves. Unfinished chairs can be sealed with clear sealer to leave the wood showing, or stained/painted to change the color entirely.
Adirondack chairs are unique in that the seat section actually doubles as the back legs. The seat sits at an incline, with the back touching the ground. This greatly simplifies the design and eliminates many extra parts. The wooden plank backing is signature of chairs like this, rising up from the base of the seat at a gentle incline. The inclines of the Adirondack are designed to make it comfortable to sit in. Instead of having a flat back and seat, the sections are positioned in a way that caresses the neck, back and head.
Following the Adirondack chair plans to the tee is not absolutely necessary. Users can alter the plan specifications to create a custom chair. Various species of hardwoods can be formed into an Adirondack chair. Fir, red cedar, teak, and Shorea are all popular. Shorea and teak can be left unfinished to produce a light grey color over time. Although made of wood, Adirondack chairs are relatively light at 20 to 30 pounds each.
To create the best seating environment, a side table can be set between two chairs, accompanied by a wood ottoman for each chair. These features can be incorporated into virtually any set of Adirondack chair plans.
