Grass carpet is perfect for certain situations.

First off, if you’re someone who wants lovely green grass design without having to deal with the challenges of growing natural grass, this post will help you.

Also, depending on the function of the grass area, you may find grass carpet helpful when…

  • You want grass underneath a swingset
  • You want extra padding for beneath a banzai water slide
  • You are installing putting greens for home use

This past weekend, I was inflating a banzai water slide and realized just how rugged the dirt (and rocks) beneath it was.

Grass Carpet

Since two young girls (ages 3 and 1-yr old) would be slipping and sliding along this thing, I didn’t want jagged rocks hitting and hurting their feet (or botttoms!)

Of course, adding other forms of padding would work– some cardboard, extra dirt, etc., and as a temporary solution– that’s what I did.

But this situation is perfect for grass carpet.  You want something durable that doesn’t take much upkeep, that helps keep the steps beneath your bare feet soft and manageable.

What is Grass Carpet exactly?

Known as a grass carpet or area rug, these special kinds of outdoor carpets mimic a grassy lawn in both texture and color.

The purpose of having a piece of carpet that looks like grass depends on the user.

Some people like to place these carpets on their patio, while others like to create makeshift putting greens in their backyard.

Made of synthetic materials, these carpets will not retain water and swell as natural fibers can. You’ll never have to deal with mold or sun rot with these carpets since they are designed exclusively for outdoor use.

To mimic the texture of grass, these carpets are made with thousands of thin strips of green plastic. The strips are layered in random patterns to make it look very much like grass.

Most grass carpets are comfortable to walk on and provide a slight tickling sensation to the feet. Since the plastic absorbs no water, these carpets dry very quickly after becoming wet.

When the carpet gets water on it from the garden hose, sprinkler system or rain, simply let it dry on the floor or hang it over a wall in the sun. When wet, outdoor grass carpet remains fairly safe to walk on and works to prevent slipping.

Plastics such as Olefin are designed to be UV resistant and will resist fading caused by sun damage.

Cleaning Grass Carpet

In the rare instance when an artificial grass carpet needs to be cleaned, simply spray a bit of water and bleach onto the dirty areas and wash with water. The non-porous plastic will not retain dirt.

Grass carpets come in rolls of various sizes which can cover anything from a small patio to an entire outdoor kitchen.

They can be taken along on RV or camping trips and rolled out on-demand.

Some people like to permanently glue their grass carpet to the ground so that it does not shift or slide while moving furniture or walking on it. Others like to have the freedom of moving their carpet around.

On the bottom of every carpet is a tough layer which bonds all of the plastic strips together.

The hardiest types of grass carpets have reinforced edges which are taped and/or sewn in place.

Durable edges are essential in preventing fraying which can unravel the entire carpet over time.

Since these carpets are so cheap, you don’t have to worry too much about replacing them as they get old.
