Workshop Heater Guide

Adding a source for heating your workshop is one of the final finishing touches most of us desire. There is a number of choices to consider when determining what the best heater is for your workshop. The most important considerations in helping you do this is to obtain an accurate measurement of the room you need to heat. The next consideration is the fuel source you want; propane, electric, gas, wood, coal, or oil?

Central heating units are rarely connected to a workshop or garage if there is not adequate insulation.   Installing a workshop heater is an excellent heating solution. Workshop heaters should be mounted or placed on a wall or ceiling near the work space. Heaters that are 1500 to 5600 watts will heat a space of 150 to 560 square feet.

Propane heaters are not as popular as electric or natural gas units. Many people do not understand how to operate propane heaters. When a consumer learns about propane heaters they understand these are efficient and easy to operate. Propane units are 15 to 25 percent less to operate than electric heaters.  Propane tanks hold 80 percent of their rated capacity, meaning a tank with a rating of ten gallons will hold eight gallons of propane. For example, if you have a heater with a 25,000 BTU, eight gallons of propane will provide 29 hours of operation. The method to generate this value is by taking eight gallons and multiplying it by 3.66 hours per gallon. Based on this total, the tank needs to be filled two times a month. Propane heaters which are not vented emit carbon monoxide. This would require a space that has excellent ventilation in order to escape.  Consider purchasing a vented propane heater to avoid this problem. A benefit of propane heaters is they do not require the use of electricity.

An alternative to electric and propane heaters is kerosene. The unit operates much like a propane heater. Kerosene heaters burn cleaner than propane units.  Just as propane heaters need excellent ventilation, so do kerosene heaters. Kerosene heaters do not require the use of electricity. The cost to operate a kerosene heater is minimal.

There are many smaller workshop heaters that require a 120 volt supply. There are many larger workshop heaters that require a 240 volt supply. Most power outlets in the United States are 120 volts. You will need an electrician to convert the electrical outlet and supply if installing a heater that operates on 240 volts.

Workshop heaters with a 1500 watt heat a space of 150 square feet. A 5,000 watt workshop heater will heat an area of 400 square feet.
