Interestingly, only a few different types of materials make up the outdoor fabrics used in patio cushions, shades and other outdoor products. Materials like Olefin, acrylic and polyester are all spun into durable fabrics which resist sun damage as well as humidity, mold and dirt. Regardless of your fabric’s composition, you should always avoid spilling suntan lotion and other oil based liquids or ones with dye. Learn about the most common types of outdoor fabrics below.

1. Polyester
Polyester is actually a plastic but feels like fabric when spun. This material can last a long time but needs to be cleaned on a regular basis to keep fresh. Polyester can be made into a solid color or printed on the exterior to form a pattern. Fading can be prevented by applying a UV sun guard spray to the exterior. This is one of the most widely used outdoor fabrics. Use a cleaning solution of 1/2 water and 1/2 soap to remove dirt. Avoid using bleach on printer polyester.

2. PVC Coated Polyester
Polyester can be coated with a plastic known as PVC to offer additional strength. PVC polyester is woven into a fabric which is breathable, allowing air to pass through. It can also be woven very tightly, creating a superior sun shield that blocks out all light. This outdoor fabric is often employed for use in patio umbrella and other shades. Wash it regularly with a 3:1 solution of water and bleach, plus a couple teaspoons of detergent. Rinse afterward to remove the solution completely and let dry.

3. Olefin
Olefin is a material that is very strong when woven together. It is dyed a certain color before woven into fabric, making it very uniform and easy to clean. It is known to resist staining, fading, abrasion and mildew. Do not use bleach when cleaning. Instead, Apply some warm water and mild detergent, followed by a water rinse.

4. Acrylic
Acrylic is a very popular outdoor fabric because of its durability and softness. The fabric is quite breathable which allows cool air to pass through while at the same time shading the area. It is easy to clean and does it not prone to staining. Acrylic outdoor fabrics can be colored before and after weaving. Post-colored fabrics are known as printed fabrics and often have patterns. Clean with warm water and mild soap.
