There are many ways to make your outdoor space more inviting, but none are as creative, appealing and flexible as a hanging chair. When the temperature’s just right, outdoor time can be spent lounging, watching the kids play or having a meal. Hanging chairs can be placed in a variety of areas and come in many styles. There is nothing like relaxing outside while swinging effortlessly on a comfy chair. Basically anyone with a porch can have one of these installed. We will discuss several types of indoor and outdoor hanging chairs.

Hammock Chairs

First let’s talk about one of the more popular varieties of these chairs – the hanging hammock. This is a very popular hanging seat that can be used both indoors and out, and come in two different types. Full-sized versions require two mounting points to hang from. The mounts can be installed on posts, trees or you can even use a free-standing mount. The comfort of these “chairs” is unparalleled – the net-like mesh cradles your body and contours to your every curve. These hammocks are a great place to lounge during any time of the year.

Hammock Chair

The second variety comes in a more typical chair form. This hanging seat consists of a mesh just like the larger versions, but are shaped into a chair. Some types will feature a cushion or wooden seat while others will be completely made of mesh. These types usually only need one mounting point (Mounting will be discussed later). While the mesh used in the construction is heavy duty to support your weight, different materials will be softer than others. You may consider purchasing a chair with cushion or fabric that lines the inside and holds in warmth. If you don’t have mounting posts, consider a few-standing unit. These are made of metal and can be put just about anywhere. Move them as needed to rearrange your furniture or avoid the sun. Most people rave about the comfort they get from sitting or reclining in one of these chairs. The hammock type chair is a great choice for any situation, but there are more hanging chairs available to you.

Choosing A Chair / Materials

If you’re looking for a more conventional chair, there are plenty of styles, designs and materials for you. The first thing to consider is the materials used in its construction. Wood is a charming and aesthetic material for use in a hanging chair, but there are a few things to consider. Wood can be painted or stained to produce a style of your choice. Weather conditions, the sun and time can wear away at wood products. Harsh sun can dull the paint and stain, producing cracks and chips. When a shaded area isn’t available, more maintenance is needed to keep the wood healthy. Avoid rain and water at all costs, as this can cause mold, discoloration and rot. A sealer can do well in protecting the wood from this. However, be sure to perform an annual cleaning or re-sanding if necessary. Other than the extra maintenance, wood is a great material for outdoor hanging chairs and looks great in any situation.

Bench Chair

A lightweight and durable alternative is a poly resin or plastic based chair. Plastic varieties can come in all kinds of shapes and can withstand the test of time if cared for. They are also more lightweight and easier to lift/setup. As with any hanging seat, some assembly may be required. Plastic models are often coupled with metal support beams for the sitting platform or arms. Any color is possible being that the plastic can be painted at will. A can of spray paint can turn the simplistic chair into a stylish one. Textured and metallic paints are available for an extra fancy result. Bench chairs are commonly used as an indoor hanging chair as well.

For a more rustic approach, consider cedar or teak as the chair material. Sanding is not really necessary on these materials which lower the maintenance you must do, while still owning a wood piece. Log-style seats are also available. These are quite heavier than most chairs and require a specific taste to enjoy. Wicker is exceptionally lightweight and has an earthy charm. Commonly woven into a hanging basket chair, wicker is best paired with a comfortable seat cushion to enjoy properly. A hanging wicker chair provides a way to experience ease of installation without having the heavy weight of conventional woods.

Bubble Chairs

Bubble Chair

More modern and perhaps exotic tastes will appreciate the hanging bubble chair. Bubble chairs break the barrier between pleasure and work furniture and can be used in any surroundings. The artistry behind creating these interesting chairs produces an appealing furniture piece. These lightweight chairs are excellent choices for both indoor and outdoor use, as they are weather resistant and sturdy. Certain outdoor varieties have a special water channel that allows rain to drain away – perfect for poolside or outdoor seating. The typical hanging bubble chair has a half-sphere often made of plastic which has a padded cushion inside. At the top is a heavy duty mount which is attached to a chain. The chair can be mounted to anywhere that a wood beam can be found. This includes patio beams, home ceilings, or even stucco if there is wood underneath. Once seated inside, you’ll experience a feeling of floating on air. A clear sphere makes the experience even cooler. You will find a huge variety of colors and patterns in these chairs. Both conservative and outgoing people can find something to meet their tastes, whether that be for home or the office.

Using Stands For Flexibility

If you just don’t have a place to hang a chair, consider purchasing a hanging chair stand. This mount eliminates the need for a beam or tree and can provide a very sophisticated look. Made of metals like aluminum or steel, these free-standing structures come in colors to match your chair. The chain or rope from the chair attaches to the mount easily and quickly, no drilling necessary. The mount can support large amounts of weight and moderate amounts of swinging. Transportation is important for some individuals who have changing needs in their outdoor space. This is the perfect solution, as the mount can be moved along with the chair to any location with solid ground. Solid ground is important because the mount could tip or be un-level which can lead to injuries. Concrete or brick is best.
A hanging chair can mean a lot of things, ranging from a modern looking bubble chair to a classic wooden patio swing. Choosing the right one depends on your unique tastes and needs. If you have a patio attached to your home, chances are a mount can be installed. If you need help, consider hiring a local handyman to get the job done. At the end of the day, sit back and enjoy your new chair.
