Ceramic area heaters are usually used indoors to heat rooms, but can also be used on the patio under the right conditions. Ceramic heaters create heat using internal ceramic plates. Electricity is run through wires inside of the plates. A fan behind the plates forces hot air out of the front to heat a small area.
High Output:
The ceramic plates generate heat which is at a higher temperature than most radiant and fan forced heaters. As a result, the airflow coming from the ceramic heater is hotter and more effective. Unlike radiant heaters which do not heat the air, ceramic space heaters cycle air in a given location to provide comfort even if the heater is not pointed in your specific direction.
Adjustable Temperature Control:
Many ceramic heaters have a temperature control dial which alters the wattage running through the ceramic plates. The temperature can quickly be increased or decreased based on the position of this dial. In addition, some heaters have a temperature sensor which maintains a chosen level of heat until the unit is turned off.
Oscillating Models:
Just like a portable fan, some ceramic heaters have the ability to oscillate. This means that the heater can turn from side to side so that it can warm multiple people at once. The speed of the oscillation can often be adjusted.
Overheat Protection:
In the event that the fan is blocked by an object and the heat gets trapped, a ceramic heater will shut down to prevent overheating. Fire safety is of the utmost importance with any kind of heater.
Use on the Patio:
It can be relatively difficult to find a ceramic heater designed exclusively for outdoor use. As a result, care must be taken in the location which the heater is placed. Choose an elevated location away from water spigots. A side table works well. Avoid areas where the heater would sit in the sunlight all day long. Consider bringing the heater indoors when it rains outside to avoid corrosion from humidity.
