One of the most important parts of a pressure washer is the hose. These hoses are designed to function under extreme pressures and should never be compared with a standard garden hose. Composed of several layers, a pressure washer hose has a network of threads running through its length to make it extremely strong. These hoses should be replaced at any sign of damage, including cracks, bulges an leaks from the connectors. Replacing a hose is actually quite easy one you know what thread you need. This also gives you the opportunity to buy a longer hose to expand your operating range. Immediate replacement of a damaged hose is very important in preventing injury caused by high powered spray.

Replacing a Hose

There are several things to look for in pressure washer hoses to determine damage. Water spraying out the sides of the tube, bulges in the plastic, cracks and leaks from the hardware are some of the things to keep in mind each and every time you turn the machine on. During replacement, refer to your user’s guide to determine the diameter and threading of your current hose. Finding a replacement then becomes easy.

Hose Care and Selection

Always select a new hose which can work in the operating temperature of your machine. An under rated hose can become brittle when exposed to water that is too hot.

Never drag a hose over materials that are too hot. Protecting the exterior of the hose is just as important as protecting the inside. Laying the hose outside in the hot sun or next to a heater is not recommended.

Chemical injection cleaning can only be done on a hose which is rated for chemical resistance.

Keep in mind that the pressure washer hose will be subjected to pulse shortening while under pressure. You need to accommodate for this change in length when selecting the right length of hose.

When connecting more than one hose together, consider installing spring guards to ease the strain at these joints.

Never use a garden hose or any hose that is intended for a use other than pressure washing.

Drain the hose after every use and flush them thoroughly after a chemical cleaning.

Always use a hose reel or rack to store your hose- never a peg or nail.

Bring your hose inside when the temperatures get below freezing. This prevents cracking caused by brittle material.

Gardeners have their work cut out for them. Many gardeners transport heavy loads of soil, rocks and plat materials around the garden on a daily basis. Moving this material with a shovel and bucket can be quite a demanding task. Wheelbarrows might seem like a good tool for the job, but they have a tendency to tilt over and be difficult to keep level. A Duraworx plastic dump cart can change all that with its four sturdy wheels for stability and durable plastic material bucket. A full load of material can easily be dumped out onto the ground by tilting the cart upward using the handle. Both carts in the Duraworx line have large air-filled tires, ensuring a smooth ride across uneven terrain.

Duraworx Dumping Garden Cart

Featured in a soft green color ideal for garden environments, Duraworx’s garden cart is the smaller of the two models. However, it packs a remarkable 600 pounds of weight capacity. Fill it up to the brim with rocks, soil or anything else you need transported with ease. The plastic bucket can take a beating, too. Only dense, crack resistant plastic is used in the construction of these buckets.

Unlike wheelbarrows, Duramax carts have four wheels for maximum stability. The wheels take all of the weight, eliminating strain on the body. Each wheel is pneumatic, meaning that they are filled with air. They form a soft cushion between the ground and the cart, minimizing vibration which could jostle the load onto the ground. At 10 inches in diameter, the wheels are large enough to traverse over uneven ground without much trouble.

Duramax makes it easy to dump a full load with the hinged bucket mechanism. At the base of the bucket near the handle is a small bar which users pull up on to tilt the bucket. The plastic bucket sits on a hinge which allows it to tilt over. The Duraworx garden cart is easy to clean between loads, only requiring a quick hose down to remove dirt from the plastic. The metal components are coated with paint to protect them from rust.

Deluxe Duraworx Plastic Dump Cart

With a generous weight capacity of 1200 pounds, this deluxe cart can handle any job you can throw at it. The pneumatic wheels have been upgraded to 13 inches in diameter to keep transport smooth. Duraworx has has replaced the standard handle with a “D-handle” which can be converted to a tractor pulling bar if desired. This cart features the same type of easy-to-use dumping mechanism as its smaller companion.

Moving large amounts of heavy materials has never been so easy. These carts get excellent reviews and are apparently here to stay.

A powerful and long lasting battery pack turns an electric motor which spins the cutting blades. Grass and other plant materials are trimmed down to size in an instant. The power is controlled by a single speed handle trigger. Unlike gas string trimmers which are loud and difficult to manage, battery powered models are lightweight and easy to carry. Most of these tools serve the dual purpose of trimming and edging, tipping the tool over to achieve a crisp lawn edge.

Features

Battery operated weed eaters have a range of features which a new buyer should consider. Additional features like a telescoping handle and edge guard can cost a bit more, but can improve the quality of the finished work and increase comfort.

The voltage of the trimmer largely determines the power of the tool. If you have a large lawn which can get out of hand quickly, a high voltage (36v) tool is recommended. An extra battery pack is always a good idea if you anticipate working for extended periods of time. Chargers are included which can charge up a pack in a few hours. These NiCd batteries are reliable and long lasting.

A telescoping handle is important for people both short and tall. Dialing in the length of the handle to match your height makes all the difference in comfort.

The cutting width of any battery operated weed eater can be easily determined by looking at the diameter of the blades. This number is given in inches, and is usually around 10-12. A larger cutting surface means that more grass can be cut in any given time. If you will be using the trimmer to trim your entire lawn, a large cutting surface is recommended.

An auto feed spool is a great feature which can save you the hassle of tapping the spring mechanism ever time you need more line. Auto feeding uses centrifugal force to pull out new string automatically.

Portability

Cordless string trimmers are ideal for people who can’t stomach the smell, sound and maintenance of a gas powered tool. The lightweight and simple nature of these tools makes them safe for people of all backgrounds to use. Users can can the confidence that they are reducing their environmental impact by not spewing fumes into the air.

When a part breaks on a pressure washer, it is important to replace it as soon as possible and not use the device until it is fixed. The high pressure water inside the machine can fire out of the machine from a broken trigger or line, causing injury. Fortunately, a full line of repair parts are available for these units. Whether you are replacing a cracked Karcher hose or want to upgrade your sprayer head, Karcher has the part for you. Replacement of these Karcher pressure washer parts is easier than it might seem. Take a look at some of these parts to get an idea of what you might need.

Trigger Guns

An essential pressure washer part, trigger guns are responsible for giving users full control over the intensity of the water jet. Attached to the end of the hose, trigger guns are ergonomically designed handles that have a control trigger. Water flow is controlled by pressing the trigger in, increasing in pressure the more it is pressed. The water spray turns off completely when depressed. A variety of spray nozzles can be attached to the end of a trigger gun. To ensure that these attachments are compatible with your trigger, check the threading on the end. Also check the threading on the hose end when buying a new trigger to ensure compatibility.

Karcher Hose

Out of all the Karcher pressure washers parts that can be replaced, damaged hoses can be the most dangerous. Hoses can crack over time, causing high pressure spray to shoot out the side. This can happen unexpectedly right after the pressure builds up when the trigger’s valve is closed. To replace the hose, you must determine what diameter and thread hose you have currently. This would be a good time to get a longer hose if needed.

Spray Tips and Nozzles

Spray tips allow users to customize their pressure washing experience. Nozzles change the way water flows out of the sprayer head. Basic sprayers shoot water out on a straight line, but this can be limiting. For applications like washing the car, a fan spray head can work a lot better. Fan heads shoot water in a wide arc- perfect for cleaning off leaves from the driveway or removing dirt on stucco walls. Specialized heads have extended necks which can give users an added reach. This is ideal for cleaning hard-to-reach gutters. Sprayer heads with brushes on the end can give sidewalks and brick a good scrub.

For best compatibility, always choose genuine Karcher pressure washer parts when shopping for new components. It is much easier to match Karcher parts with your machine than searching for a generic part.

Every part from the recoil springs to the handle lock mechanism is built to last. Felco makes a wide variety of the most essential gardening tools. Their classic pruners are great for trimming small to medium plant limbs with minimal effort. Their manual pruning shears are designed for larger jobs like cutting tree branches. Other tools like pruning saws and wire cutters are available for specialty jobs. Felco uses signature red handles to clearly define their brand. When cleaned regularly and kept in a dry location, Felco tools can last a lifetime.

Felco Pruning Shears

Felco’s pruning shears are designed to fit well in the hand. This 10.5 inch long tool has incredibly sharp hardened steel blades which can cut through just about anything. The long handles provide enough leverage to cut through small to medium sized plant material. The Felco pruner allows gardeners to chisel and refine their plants exactly the way they want them. Regular trimming of plants with this Felco tool can result in better long term plant health and vigorous growth.

A built-in cushioned stop prevents the tool from coming down hard, preventing vibrations which can be uncomfortable to the user’s hand. A sap groove diverts liquid plant material to the side so it doesn’t get caught in the blades. fine adjustments to the blade can be made with the adjuster knob. The lightweight handles are coated with a red rubber grip for maximum control. Both right and left-handed versions are available.

Felco Loppers

Felco’s loppers are designed for larger jobs such as cutting off thick tree limbs or removing the stump of a dead bush. This tool has long, thick handles that are designed to maximize human strength and focus it at the blades. The super sharp steel blades are curved so that they can grip around a branch without slipping. Vibration during the cut is reduced by the handle cushion in the center. An adjuster key is included to allow users to adjust the blades as necessary. As with all Felco garden tools, this model has red padded handles.

Felco Folding Saw

The compact pocket-sized folding saw from Felco is perfect for cutting jobs of all types. The hard chromed steel blade is designed to resist rust and stay sharp. The blade is thinner on the top than on the bottom to prevent clogging and jamming. The serrated blade is capable of cutting branches up to 4 inches in diameter. At full length, the tool measures about 14 inches long and has a 6 inch blade. A non-slip rubber handle keeps users in control and prevents slippage.

A plastic watering can is often greatly beneficial when watering the garden. While water directly from the hose can work in many cases, hose water can spray rapidly, toppling plants and eroding soil over roots. Also, some people have yards so large that their garden hose cannot reach these areas. A watering can is designed to hold water in a receptacle and pour it from a spout. Watering can spouts can come in different orientations, some forming a shower action while others emit a solid stream. Tipping the can at various angles allows users to change the rate at which the water comes out. This allows for precise control of how much water the plants get.

Benefits of a Plastic Watering Can

Having a watering can on hand is a good idea if you are a gardener. You never know when you will need the help of a watering can to reach difficult areas. Because these cans can only hold a set amount of water at any given time, they are best used for watering potted plants. The reservoir of water is usually enough to water several plants before returning to the spigot for a refill.

Gardeners often use these cans to deliver liquid plant feed right to the root. Most liquid plant feed products need to be dissolved in water before application. The water and feed can be mixed together in the can for dual application, saving time. The pinpoint accuracy of the watering head allows users to distribute water and nutrients right where it is needed.

Plastic watering cans are superior to steel ones in that they will not rust. Plastic can be molded into many shapes that are comfortable to use and functional.

Features

Why do so many people use a plastic watering can when they could just use their hose? Watering cans are more comfortable to use, for one, and are easy to carry around. The water that comes out of hoses can be difficult to control and can spray in a harsh way. Water from a can is poured gently, preventing damage to your garden. Using a can promotes a more personal experience with your yard.

The first thing to look for in a can is what the water capacity is. Too little capacity will result in many trips between the garden and spigot. Too much and the can will be too heavy to carry when full (water weighs around 8 pounds per gallon).

Certain cans such as the ones from OXO have spouts which can rotate backward for storage. Rotating spouts keep water from flowing out while walking or maneuvering to the work site. Simply rotate the spout back around to start watering.

A scale on the side of the plastic can may come in handy when mixing ratios of fertilizer and water. Being able to see exactly how much liquid is inside the can is important to some gardeners. Since you will be carrying this can around, it makes sense to have a comfortable, ergonomic grip to carry it with. Handles that curve over the top and back of the can are best because they are comfortable to use in the upright and watering position. Working around water can make the handle slippery, so look for watering cans which have a rubber grip if this is a concern.

Spray Tips

Spray tips change the way the water flows out of the can. A tip with multiple holes on the end will result in a rain-like shower of water. This type of tip works well in gardens where there are delicate plants like flowers. Spouted tips, on the other hand, release water in a single flow much like a hose does except without the harsh pressure. Spouts release water quicker than shower heads, making them more suited for watering lots of plants quickly.

When a lawn becomes bumpy and uneven, a garden roller can be used to flatten it out. Garden rollers have been around for many years and are quite effective at what they do. Originally made exclusively from steel or iron cylinders, these rollers are now made mostly of plastic. The weight is added by filling the cylinder with sand or water. Unlike rollers of days gone by, modern ones can change their weight by filling or emptying the barrel. These tools come in two forms, one that gets pushed with human power and another that attaches to a garden tractor. For small yards, a hand-pushed roller can do just fine. Commercial applications often employ the larger tractor-mounted models to save time and energy.

Why Use a Garden Roller?

An uneven lawn is an unattractive lawn. Bumps in the soil can be caused for a number of reasons. The most common cause is from gophers or other burrowing rodents. Large rodents can create large mounds of dirt practically overnight. When multiple rodents start digging, you can have a real problem on your hands.

Water runoff can erode sections of a lawn, creating deep chasms in the ground and large mounds of mud at the exit point. This type of unevenness can be particularly ugly and difficult to repair. Although the damage has already been done, users can run a garden roller over the surface to level it before replanting seeds.

Perhaps your lawn has been uneven since you moved into the home. In this case, there is still hope. If these are large humps in your yard, the top level of grass may have to be removed. Once the top layer is gone, users can then use a shovel or tractor to remove the majority of the dirt. After completion, a garden lawn roller can be used to flatten and compact the area before re-seeding.

Have you ever wondered how golf course turf remains so flat and pristine? Golf courses use lawn rollers frequently to maintain a smooth and level surface for the players. Without this uniformity, the golf balls could roll in unexpected directions, fouling up the players’ game.

How Do You Use This Tool?

The process of using one of these rollers is actually quite simple. Before use, the roller will need to be filled with water or sand. Water is my personal choice because it is easier to work with- just put your garden hose into the barrel’s fill hole and let it run. You can either fill it all the way up or only partial way. A partial fill will make it easier to roll, but will reduce the tool’s effectiveness. If you have turf, remove the bulging section before rolling over it. This can be done with a sharp knife. The turf can then be replaced without harm.

If you have a grass lawn and are trying to flatten bumps, you may have to dig up the grass in that area. If the soil is compacted, rolling over it will not do much.

A garden roller can also be used after seeding or re-seeding a lawn. After fertilizer, manure and seed has been laid, a roller can be used to flatten the seed into the ground where it will stay wet and safe from birds.

One Word of Caution:

If a garden lawn roller is used frequently, the soil can become compacted. This is a common problem at golf courses where rollers are used a lot. Using a roller frequently won’t cause damage if you make sure to aerate frequently as well. In the process of aeration, small holes are made in the soil to allow water and nutrients to reach the roots. Compacted soil does not allow water to seep into the ground efficiently, depleting the grass of life-supporting water, oxygen and food. You can use a rolling lawn aerator for this step.

Product Highlight:

Agri Fab Lawn Roller: People looking for an easy to use, durable roller for home use should consider the Agri Fab tool. This roller has a large 24 inch diameter drum that rolls over bumps smoothly. When fully filled with water, it reached 250 pounds, more than enough for flattening bumps out. When emptied, the roller is lightweight and easy to manage. The black plastic drum is smooth to achieve even flattening. A bar on the metal handle pushes off any mud that gets stuck to the drum.

When excess thatch builds up in lawn soil, a lawn scarifier is often employed to break up the ground and remove debris. Everyday debris and dead grass can typically be removed with a spring lawn rake. However, when years of growth need to be removed, the small tines on these lawn rakes are often not enough to penetrate the ground. Thatch is composed of dead grass and sometimes moss which can gather on and below the ground. Over time, this layer can become so thick that is suffocated your lawn, preventing water and nutrients from reaching the roots. Thatch does not break down or degrade over time, allowing it to build up.

Lawns require a certain ratio of carbon and nitrogen to grow properly. Thatch happens to have an abundance of carbon and little nitrogen, a bad combination for growing green grass. When the thatch becomes deeper than 1/2 inch, it is time to use a scarifier to break it up. If left untreated, thatch can become a breeding ground for plant disease and insects. It becomes a barrier that prevents oxygen, water and nutrients from reaching the roots. Shoot density plummets, resulting in a thin and unattractive lawn. It the worst case, it will turn brown and die.

What is a Lawn Scarifier?

Lawn scarifiers come in several different forms but each do the same thing. When pulled over a lawn, they dig into the ground with a set of sharp metal teeth. These teeth tear apart tough thatch, allowing water to penetrate the ground once again. A portion of the thatch is also removed in this process. The scarifier teeth range in depth from 0.5 to around 1.5 inches in depth depending on the model. Some units even have adjustable teeth. The most basic of scarifiers are the manual push-roller models. They look quite similar to a push reel lawnmower except that they have a series of teeth on the end. Users pull on the handles, rolling the tool across their yard. These push models work best in smaller yards.

The next step up from push models are the self-propelled units. These models still require users to hold handles but the machine pushes itself. These models are heavier which means that they can dig into the ground deeper, thus making them more suited for large jobs. These units are seen more in commercial applications than home use. A gasoline or electric lawn scarifier will run quite a bit more in cost than a human powered model.

For the biggest lawn scarifying jobs, a tractor-pulled scarifier is the best choice. These heavy duty attachments connect to a garden tractor hitch. Users simply drive their tractor over the thatch-ridden areas as the unit follows behind.

How to Scarify a Lawn

Always use a lawn scarifier with vertical knife blades, as they dig into the ground and remove thatch most effectively. To start, set your blades to a shallow depth and make a pass over your lawn. After the first pass, change the angle of your cut and increase the blade depth slightly. It is best to spread out your cuts, gradually increasing the depth as you go. This is more effective and healthy for your lawn than running one deep cut through it. If done incorrectly, you could tear up your whole lawn and kill a good portion of it. Your goal is to leave at least 75 percent of your lawn intact after the job. The debris you collect can be used in a compost tumbler and put back in your lawn after decomposition.

Related Posts:

Getting the job done often required the use of several specialized tools. Garden rollers are used to flatten out uneven areas of a lawn. A rolling lawn aerator is used to make small holes in the ground so water and oxygen can reach the roots.

The Hozelock auto reel solves a nagging problem that many people have around their home- garden hose storage. Hoses can be exceptionally difficult to store because of their awkward shape. Twisting and curling a hose with the intent of storing it in a perfect circle on the ground often leads to distress. Automatic hose reels like the one from Hozelock solve this issue by offering a contained place to store your hoses while keeping them available for quick access. Most hose reels today require users to crank a handle to reel the hose in. Also, users often have to manually guide the hose in as they crank as to not cause a jam. Hozelock has designed a reel that does away with these pesky problems altogether.

Hozelock Auto Reel Overview:

The auto reel by Hozelock does not require manual cranking. Instead, a powerful spring attached to the internal barrel winds up the hose for you. The spring only engages when you push a button on the side, allowing you to easily pull hose from the reel without resistance. The auto reel can be mounted to a wall fixture that allows the reel to rotate 180 degrees, following your movements around the yard. This rotation also allows the reel to face the direction that the hose is being pulled in. The Hozelock reel keeps your garden hose contained in a sleek green container between uses, keeping it off the ground and out of sight. Users only pull out as much hose as they need, saving time and energy. Let’s take a look at the two different models that they offer:

Hozelock 2490 Auto-Rewind Wall Reel

The 2490 is Hozelock’s largest model, intended to be used in large yards with lots of ground to cover. The company includes a 65 foot garden hose with the reel that matches the reel in color. At the end of the hose is a small retainer ball that prevents the hose end from being reeled into the container. A handy multi-use sprayer handle is also included. All 65 feet of the hose except for the end are concealed within the structure between uses, tidying up any yard in minutes. A barrel inside the reel holds the hose which wraps around it. A spring system turns the barrel to pull the hose back in without any effort on the user’s part. The reel is mounted to a fixture which can turn 180 degrees to stay pointed in the direction of the operator. This reduces the chance for jams and wrapping around bushes and objects. After you pull out whatever length of hose you need, the hose locks into place. Everything comes fully assembled and ready to use- just mount the reel to the wall next to your spigot and connect the leader hose to it.

Hozelock Mini Reel

Designed for the small to average yard, Hozelock’s mini reel includes over 32 feet of hose. It functions in exactly the same way as its larger cousin, featuring a spring loaded return mechanism and spray nozzle. This smaller design is best suited for individuals with smaller yards. A reel is superior to a hose hanger because they hide the hose from view and require no twisting.

A rolling lawn aerator is one of those lawn tools that everyone needs but not everyone owns. Even experienced lawn owners can become perplexed when their lawn starts turning brown. Regular watering, trimming and even fertilizing are not fool-proof, as a lawn can require more than just the basic maintenance to keep in good health. Aerators make many small holes in a lawn which allow water and nutrients to travel directly to the roots. Over time, lawn soil can become compacted which prevents enough water from seeping into the ground. This usually results in a dry, nutrient deficient lawn that will turn brown no matter what you do. Regular aeration can be done using a roller with spikes known as a rolling aerator. These devices are easy to use and will quickly become one of your favorite tools to use.

How it Works

These tools consist of a long handle with a rolling cylinder on one end. The roller has a series of metal spikes which press into the ground as the roller is pushed along. The weight of the tool combined with the force of the user makes small holes in the ground. Water and nutrients can seep into these holes, keeping the ground wet, infusing it with oxygen and allowing nutrients to reach the roots.

The weight of the roller plays a large part in how deep these holes will be. An average rolling aerator may not be heavy enough to penetrate the surface. Maintaining an existing healthy lawn is the best way to ensure long term yard health.

Waiting until the soil has dried out will only make this job harder. With these tools, a larger diameter cylinder makes for smoother operation. For large yards, a wide cylinder is desired to reduce the amount of passes the user has to make to cover the whole yard. Compaction of the soil can occur naturally over time and is especially prevalent in areas of high foot traffic.

Using an Aeration Tool

To breathe life into your lawn, an aerator should be used regularly. Professionals recommend using it in the fall and spring, but aerating a lawn is always beneficial no matter when you do it. It is important to make sure that the ground is moist or at least damp before starting the job. If the soil is completely dry, water it thoroughly the day before you begin. You may travel over the same sections several times if desired, but limit yourself if the ground starts to become significantly torn up.

A rolling lawn aerator can be used to improve the growth rates of new lawns, too. If seed is applied right after aerating, seeds will be able to take root deeper than with bare soil alone.

Difference Between Core and Spike Aeration

Spiked aerators use a solid hardened steel spike to penetrate the ground. This actually causes the ground to be come further compacted. As the spike is driven into the ground, it pushed soil aside, compacting it in the process. Core aerators consist of a hollow tube which removes a solid core or dirt several inches long. No compaction occurs with core aeration, which some claim makes it superior to its spiked cousin. Fresh cores pop out of the tubes after each press, landing onto the ground. The beneficial microbes in the soil can now work their way back down into the ground, passing the roots as they go. The holes made by aerating the soil. will collect pockets of water and nutrients, whereupon they will seep into the ground.
